From wedding cake decorator to needle felting artist, and
everywhere in between.
Meet the Artist
Hi! I’m Cathy (or Catherine) and I’m the artist behind Birds of a Felter.
My creative journey has been anything but linear. Over the years, I’ve taken many different paths: graphic designer, wedding cake decorator, sugar and gingerbread artist, and college pastry instructor. I even authored and photographed a book on gingerbread called The Magic of Gingerbread (it’s out of print now, but copies are still floating around if you’re lucky!).
My creative journey has been anything but linear. A New Creative Outlet
While my career in the edible arts is mostly behind me, my love of making things is as strong as ever. In 2022, I discovered needle felting, which is the process of sculpting wool fibres by repeatedly poking them with barbed needles, and I was immediately hooked. It’s meticulous and meditative, which suits me perfectly, and it's incredibly rewarding.
A Lifelong Love of Soft Creatures
As a kid, I was obsessed with stuffed animals. My room was packed with them, from a wrinkled elephant I adored to a seven-foot-tall pink flamingo. As I've grown older, I still love them just as much! I’ve held onto many of my childhood stuffed friends and still can’t resist adding to my collection every now and then.
Needle felting gave me the chance to create my own little creatures, each with its own personality and charm. I originally planned to focus on birds (hence the name Birds of a Felter), but I quickly fell in love with sculpting all kinds of animals, and the list keeps growing!

A New Chapter
Recently, I partnered with my talented nephew, Mason, who brings fresh energy and sharp business insight to the table. Together, we’re building this online home for our felting kits and future creative offerings.
With Mason managing the business side and me crafting and designing, we’re excited to offer a truly enjoyable shopping experience, that blends creativity, quality, and accessibility.
